Have seen a fair amount of heater cores spring leaks. The heater core replacement is relatively easy and requires minimal disassembly to access.

You can reach down by the gas pedal and pull back the carpeting. There is a small plastic panel you can remove to get visual access to hearter core area. You can reach in and feel for any moisture. I have same hint of a/f, thought my heater core was leaking, but could not find evidence of leak there. Good luck, if you find leak, plesae post.
