Considering Optima Battery C70 2000

I searched the previous threads on the Optima battery.
Do the various "colors" come in different sizes?
I intend to call 2-3 places to price it and hope to buy at a dealer whose inventory turns often (so it's fresher).

I still don't see water missing from any cells and am extremely upset over the substantial "eaten" metal in front of the o.e. battery.

I installed one in my V70. Had the same problem that someone above listed and got around it with some Monster Cable bettery terminals. I also "fabricated my own battery tie-down.

I have one in my Jeep, a Red Top, and it's an awesome battery. Thing acts the same whether is 110 or -10F. The problem with the Volvo is that I think the Optima might be too high, and you'd have to figure out some sort of mounting system. Optima has a nice website, might be worth a call to them. Post if you find out anything, as I'd like to do the same some day.

      Called Optima:
My C70 Conv. calls for a Type 47 battery w/ 600 CCA (the coupe calls for a Type 48 w/ 420 CCA which is surprising since it's turbo too and based on my chart of BCI group numbers, it doesn't make sense dimension-wise). Optima doesn't produce a Type 47 or Type 48, BUT

I measure my battery (w/o posts) at
      10 3/4 Wide by 6 3/4 Deep by 7 1/2 Tall

Their spec on their model 34 INCLUDES POSTS at
10.0" Wide by 6.8" Deep by 7.8" Tall and 800 CCA

Their spec on their model 75/35 INCLUDES POSTS at
9.4" Wide by 6.8" Deep by 7.6" Tall and 720 CCA
(This one has 2 sets of posts - top + side)

Polarity is correct, and the size of the 34 is SO CLOSE!
I don't know how either the 34 or 75/35 would work w/ existing bottom mount.
Also, the 34 has posts slightly in from edge and centered vs. the 75/35 which is out to edge, but also slightly centered so I must check for a different level of play in cable depending which I go with.

Don't know what to do (yet).

I installed Optima in my 1998 V70 and the tray was not a problem, battery fit was great but clamping doesn't work. Posts are too far in for my L-shaped terminals to reach them. I ended up changing the terminals to flat ones but it was well worth the effort. The battery is awsome, even at -30C cranks as well as at +25C.

Go slow. Try before you buy. The bottom clamping mechanism is very special and will only work with the right battery. It takes either of 2 lengths. Have a look at the little plastic clip on the tray, toward the center of the car. It rotates off and on and locks the battery in the base.

That's the mounting problem I was referring to. I think you'd have to switch to a more generic battery tray in order to accomodate any Optima. Not necessarily a problem, since you "might" be able to relocate the tray slightly to accomodate the size differences, but it's not going to be a plug-n-play swap.

If you want Plug and Play go with the Interstate MT-47.
Pops right in and uses existing clamp.

If your OEM is getting near 42 months get it out.
Learn from my mistake. I gambled and lost.
These OEM's fail with no warning leaving you stranded.

I would go that route, except I want a superior performance battery that won't eat through the metal surrounding it like the o.e. battery did (and I still haven't seen where acid came from - all cells caps were tight and I don't see the level down in any one cell). My Miata had a o.e. Panasonic gel battery which I've replaced 2x w/ sealed Westco battery (necessary as battery is in the trunk), but Westco doesn't make a battery that large. I would take your advice at any other time, since I don't trust Sears DieHard like I did for oh-so-many years. Thanks.
