Received my RECALL NOTICE Re: seat heaters! 850

Hey- Last Friday I got the notice and it says I should go see my local dealer for the fix; mine is a 97 854 T5(with a 12/96 build date). Thing is my seat works fine, but my passenger seat works occasionaly! Is volvo fixing both seats or just the driver? Anyone knows the story behind the recall? someone got their butt on fire or just a couple million complaints?? Y U ask? Cause I want the same recall for my frigging ABS ECU(he,he,he,he,he,he). I'll share the outcome by Friday.

The recall is for both seats. Apparently a few 850's went up in flames and a bunch burned the seats only.

As far as your ECU, did you file a complaint with NHTSA www.NHTSA.org. The only way they'll recall is if enough complaints are filed. Otherwise, Volvo must do it voluntarily--- and they won't. My dealer does about 5 a week, so I think that that's sufficient to warrant a recall, that's over 250 a year just at one dealer.

What are the symptoms for the ABS ECU failure? I have a 97, 850, T-5. The ABS/Tracs lights come on and just before they light up, a low-pitched whirring sound comes from the area of the ABS pump. This is an intermittant problem that seems to go away for a time and then come back. On a long trip, it will go through a couple of cycles of failure and then reset.

I have the same car 850, 97 T5 and I had the same symptoms with going on and off both ABS and Tracks. I did not know about this forum at that time, so I went to dealer .They had to replace ABS module. Big many for me over $730.00. Parts are close to 500.00 (at dealer) and rest the labor. I wrote a letter to Volvo of America with complain because I had only 48K miles on my car but warranty expired. They send me a letter saying that can not respond to all individual needs. Shame on them and Volvo. Paying for car close close to 40K and expensive repaire at 48K miles.

I hate to add me too messages. But I have the same problem. I'm getting my ABS/TRACS module replaced next week. It's been intermittly lighting up the
ABS/TRACS light since I got it at 30K miles. I had the sensors cleaned/replaced
under warranty, but of course it didn't fix the problem. I hopefully will get it
replaced under my extended warrenty if not I will be replacing it myself, since I can at least save $$ on labor costs. I will be fileing a complaint as well

Yeah I filed my complaint w/NHTSA many moons ago! I even went so far as to ask my law parters about a posible case and the short ans. is: they won't touch it unless a serious accident is due to the unit or a death.
