replacing ABS module in '98 V70 V70-XC70

Hi, My TRACS and ABS lights are coming on intermittantly, with occasional goofiness in the brake pedal. From most of the posts I've read, the ABS module is the most likely suspect. I have had the brake fluid flushed and replaced recently, but do not recall if the lights were coming on before the service.

I plan on replacing the ABS module myself. Where exactly on the car is it located? Any other practical tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

replacing ABS module in '98 V70; ABS/TRAC light on/off V70-XC70

I've been reading this board for nearly an hour, and this problem is well known, well documented, expensive, and ignored by Volvo. As others have recommended, I've filed a complaint with National Highway Safety Board and written to Volvo/USA. I'm sure nothing will become of the complaints, but it's a disgrace for a company that sells cars in the USA virtually completely based on safety (they use different marketing strategies elsewhere in the world---but know that USA consumers react to safety). My smug dealer's service manager (W. Mass), thinks nothing of talking about a $600+ repair. I'm sick of these kind of repairs, and more sick about the dealer's attitude.

This board is great, but unless we get some action (class-action suit, responsive dealer/manufacturer), we're all just letting off steam. Let's all speak with our wallet. There are many other great, SAFE, cars out there. Few by US companies (but, hey, Volvo is Ford), so shop carefully and most important tell all your friends.

Did you end up replacing this yourself?

What advice can you give to someone with a similar problem?

Peter

the abs control module is a sealed unit, volvo charges its dealers a $100.00 core charge for every control module each dealer orders for stock. Do not take your old one apart, for it might cost you an extra $100.00 for a non returnable core. Even if you get it replaced you might still have to have someone clear the codes on the car.

Where is this module located, or how do I get to it? Are you saying that the ABS module is connected something bigger that needs to be replaced in total?
