850 Auto Transmission- Highest Mileage? 850

I'm currently running a T5 with an original AUTO transmission 106K. Still shifts smooth as silk.

Has anyone out there got more miles on there AUTO transmission?

149K Miles, Changed the fluid once to Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF at 95K. Runs strong and shifts smooth. I only drive in Sport and I make her put a grin on my face everytime I drive her.

ODO stopped at 180KMiles, and keeps on running. 850

My odometer quit working at 180kmiles, and the car just keeps running fine. Probably over 200kmiles by now. I drive over 20kmiles/year. 94 854 with many of the typical issues listed on the Brickboard. All original drivetrain since new.

850 Auto Transmission- Highest Mileage? 850

I have 175K miles on my original tranny. Changed the fluid at 120K. I have to watch the tach to know if it's shifting. I use sport mode and don't babby it.

    yeap, '93 850 with 121k miles.

Shifing has not changed much since I had it for the last 30k miles. I cannot say if it shifts smooth as silk but I have seen a '97 or 98 volvo with 50k that has some what close smoothness.

Besides the rear main seal I have not done any major repair (links and few other minor stuff). 'guess I am an exceptional owner of the 1st production year in the US. I have to admit, this car is a major hog (170 HP) and rides like a tank! I hope to go at least 200k out of this bad boy or UWFO, until wheels fall off!

Before, I had a '85 Honda Prelude, 170k miles, with original transmission and then I sold it! I think, the buyer drove it upto 190k miles and then the transmission started to go.

its great to hear these good stories of the 850 tranny, my '93 has 117k on it, im gonna flush out the tranny hopefully next week, just becasue the fluid looks a little dirty, you can tell when it shifts but it isnt like an intolerable bang or anything, im pleased with my ride

I'm driving my 94 non-turbo in a daily 70 mile commute. I've had the trans fluid changed twice that I can recall, certainly no more than 3 times. The trans, as well as the rest of the car, is running strong and capably. I now use maybe a quart of oil between changes.

The only major non-scheduled maintenance I've had done is replacement of rear engine seals - and I had the mech replace the front seals at the same time. The infamous PnP switch gives me trouble occasionally, forcing me into winter start-off mode for a few days, but other than that I'm ecstatis.

        I expect to get at least 250 k miles, probably 300 k.

I've got 137k on mine. Runs ok. Fluid is a little dirty. I have this fear that if i change the trans fluid, i'll run into problems. Anyone have this or am i just being paranoid??

i thought about that, but i dont know the truth behind it, i figure why would it be bad to have clean fluid? in all my brickboard reading ive come across one person who said not to flush a tranny

          Transmission Reliability 850 1993

          Great mileage DaveF

And to think that some refer to the 850 transmission as being unreliable/fragile!

I was expecting the highest mileage for a transmission to be someone who had changed there transmission oil every year or 10k miles, not from someone who only did it every 50k miles or so.

This in my view adds weight to Volvo's recommendation for an oil change every 37k miles.. Or can anyone who has changed their oil regularly report if they have the same kind of miles on their original transmission?
