Popping in Steering Column S80

My 2000 S80 that I bought 1000 miles ago has developed a popping noise in the steering column while accelerating. Any ideas...after reading some of the horror stories about the S80's I'm checking everythng while still under warranty.
Thanks in advance.

    Popping in Steering Column S80

A common problem in 2000 and 2001 models, caused by manufacturing imperfections (rough spots) in the collapsable steering column, which create binding. Because the steering rack is fastened to a subframe, and the steering wheel to the body, the column must be able to change its length when you acellerate and brake. The fix involves removing the center section of the column, refinishing the surface with sanding cloth, and replacing the grease.

There is a dealer service bulletin for this. I have a copy that I purchased from Volvo. If your Dealer is like mine, he/she will disavow any knowledge of the problem and/or solution until you present them with a copy of the bulletin.
Send me a message at n0v8or@cox.net, and I'll reply with a PDF of the bulletin attached.

I've been 20K miles since the repair was performed. So far, the noise has not reappeared.

Popping in Steering Column 850 1997

I have the same symptom I believe, but I own a '97 850 N/A. From testing this over and over every time I drive, I have determined that the clunk is only felt on initial acceleration just after BRAKING to a complete stop. The reason I emphasized braking, is I have found that if I decelerate to almost a stop using the eng/trans and finally the hand brake without touching the brake pedal, nothing is felt on acceleration. Only when accelerating after braking normally is it felt. It does not do it when braking from speed and then accelerating without coming to a complete stop either ???). Also, the harder the braking/acceleration the more severe of a clunk. It can be felt when my hand is at 12 o'clock pulling downward on the wheel. None-the-less, it is very annoying. I have the checked what I can see on the rack and there are no leaks and nothing appears to be loose. I have been putting it off because I assumed it was probably some thing loose in the steering column/tilt mechanism (but still had suspicion of something deeper). Bottom line, I think this affects more vehicles than just '01 & '02. Would love to see a thread/pole started on who is experiencing. By the way, could you send a copy of the tech/serv info you have? FAX (803)737-3368

      David
