Lens/headlight removal 850 1995

Does anyone know how to replace the lens on the front driver's side headlight? I took a brief look, and it seems as though I have to take out the whole assembly just to get the fastners off...Any suggestions? (I don't want to buy the entire headlight system when I can pay less for the lens)

And, does anyone know how the trunk light works in the sedan? I have put a new bulb in there, it IS turned on, but it won't work. My mechanic says it's missing a ground signal...

Thanks!

Lens/headlight removal.... trunk light 850 1995

The hardest part about the headlight lens is the inboard clip on the plastic trim piece, after you work that off just pull the trim piece straight out and the other clips will let go. There is a small phillips head screw on the top outboard side of the headlights that anchor the side turnsignal housing, remove that little screw and pull the turnsignal housing straight out and it will pop free. I hope you are only replacing the stock lenses with some new E-code lens from FCPGroton.com. If not, you're wasting your time.

For the trunk light. There is a ON/OFF wheel switch on the trunklight itself, make sure that works with the trunk open. Its only a two position switch so its either ON or OFF or broke. The light gets its activation signal from the trunk latch itself. The latch in the trunk lid should activate the light, you can move it with your fingers without closing the trunk lid to test it. There's a wire going from the lid latch to the light switch, follow that and see if you find any breaks or disconnects. I'm assuming you know for sure the bulb is good. Test it with an ohmmeter if you're not positive. Good luck and let us know what you find.

More on the trunk light 850 1995

Well, what I found disturbed me more than it comforted me...I got into the trunk to look for the ground wire, and I noticed a crack running through the body underneath the speaker, on the driver's side. It's been crudly patched up by bondo or something, but the car has clearly been in an accident (the car does have a salvaged title, but for the front, not the rear end). This probably explains why the trunk lock will only unlock the entire car, but not lock it back up. I guess where I'm going with all of this is that I think the lid was taken off/apart due to whatever accident the car might have been in. Therefore, whoever put it back on probably neglected to connect the grounding wire...However, in light of all of this, it might be possible that the wire isn't even there...which leads me to my next question: where EXACTLY am I supposed to look for this wire? Do I need to take off the carpet paneling on the lid? Where does it begin and what does it run through?? What does it look like exactly?

Thanks for all the input so far,

-the Captain

Wow, thats too bad. Did you get a key FOB with the car? Does the FOB work correctly? I've seen them over on Ebay for $20 if you need another one. I went out and tried my trunk lock with just the key and yes it locks and unlocks the whole car either way. Sounds like you need to take the trunk lid apart anyway. The trunklighting ground wire runs into the main plug at the trunk latch, the plug is integral with the latch. The ground wire coming from the trunklight is a blue wire with brown stripe on it. Maybe the trunk latch is bad (it controls both) and causing both your problems due to the accident or post-accident repair work. If you ground out the blue/brown wire your trunklight should come on. They may have left the grounding straps off the trunk lid when they did the repair, look around for disconnected black wires. Anyway take the insolation off the trunk lid and look around. You'll probably need to pull the lock/latch assembly out and test it but I'm guessing thats your problem. Good luck ....... Mike

Lens/headlight removal 850 1995

For 95, all you have to remove are the turn-signal light assembly, headlight wipers (by undo the nut on the motor shaft), and the plastic trims under the headlight assembly.
After all that, remove the old clips around the headlight lens. As mentioned by other brickers, new lens come with new weather strip and clips.
Bay 13 http://www.volvospeed.com/volvo_performance.php link has the instruction to install the E-code lens. A good reference for headlight lens replacement.

My car's a 70 so it might be a little different. Open hood, and slide out side marker fixture (depress a little plastic tab, might need a screwdriver). If you have headlight wipers remove them, too. Unscrew the little bolts (three of them) and the fixture comes right out.

To remove the lens, just snap off the little retaining clips and the lens comes right off. R&R for each side is 10 min max. The new lens will come with a new weather seal and clips. To really upgrade the lighting, get e-codes for both sides if you don't already have them.

As to the bad ground, easiest repair is to run a new ground using those Radio Shack wire taps that clamp onto the wires. The ground wires in Volvos are black.
