Engine Cleaning 850

Reading the 'shadetree mechanic' posting
below, one person mentioned keeping the engine
clean.

My 2 recent Volvo 850 purchases (96 sedan and 94 wagon)
both have typical New Mexico dust coating just about
everything.

I assume it is not as simple as turning on the hose
and spraying out the engine compartment... Can someone
outline the engine cleaning procedure?

I would love to have them looking clean and cared
for again, even if I have to repeat the process often
in this burning desert environment.

Thanks!

do not spay the engine at your local diy car wash,
you will get water in the spark plug hole ,

this will trip check engine (trust me I did it)
I clean my by hand wth rags and degreaser.
I use armorall on the hoses and plastic,
    the engine looks brand new.

I agree with 93 and 97 about the cleaning. I learned from experience
2 years ago at the local car wash.- Beautiful looking engine, however water on the plugs and a $54 dollar tow later all was resolved.

However, yesterday I tried it again........... this time I duct taped the
spark plug cover and covered it with a towel and then gunked all the grease and grime from the engine. Touched it up with Armor All and it is in show room condition.

Poll: Why Do You Keep Your 850? (<1997) 850

Interesting... both my motors are pretty dirty,
by hand would be a lot of effort (a quickly undone
        by the next few sandstorms).

I may try sealing the plug area up, and hitting the
car wash. Is that the only area i need to be concerned
        about?

        Thanks for the help,

        -jas
