Volvo 850 sun roof wont open 850 1996

The sunroof on my 850 made a noise and now will not work. The hatch will go up and down but the sunroof itself will not slide open.

    the mechanisms on the side that hinge and allow the roof to open in tho opposite direction, have a plastic liner on the channels. this commonly breaks off and falls into the track . blocking the roof from opening. a little compressed air should remove them for you and then you should replace both side hinges.

    It can be either:

    1) the switch on your dashboard
    2) bad motor
    3) bad relay
    4) mechanical failure of some component in the sunroof assembly preventing it from opening (sliding).

    I had the same problem and it was the mechanical failure (I had a piece of metal in one of the rails...have no idea how it got there...

    I have the relay (dealer cost $170) and would sell it for $25 shipped....if you want to try that, shoot me an email to: vrrrum@hotmail.com

      This is a bit off the wall, but sometimes mine pops down, but stalls when it tries to retract. I can open it, however, but pushing upwards on teh front while opening it.

      It acts wierd because an arm on the sliding piece on one side (not the black plastic) is broken, and I really don't want to pay the $250 part and take it all apart again.

    Is your sunroof motorized or manual?

    My Honda had a motorized sunroof that stopped working and the problem was corroded points on the dashboard switch.

    My Volvo manual crank sunroof stopped opening when the roof insulation (a rubber mat glued to the roof sheet metal) came unglued just behind the sunroof, then curled down and jammed the sunroof as it retracted. Cutting away the offending insulation solved the problem, but it was a bit of a job to drop the interior roof liner to get at the problem.
