cranks, but won't start 850

Yesterday, my wife's 96 855 n/a died in an intersection. It cranks, but will not start. I can't hear the fuel pump cycle on when the key is turned on. It will fire just for a split second, but as soon as the key is released from the start position, it dies. Most likely the fuel pump. Is there a relay or fuse to check? Could it be the ecu? What is the best way to confirm it is the fuel pump? Your advice and experience is greatly appreciated! The car has 210,000 miles on it. Thanks Brickboarders!

Happened to my wife with our 95 850 n/a (car died in traffic). Had it towed...dealer replaced the coil and something else electrical (amp pack?). No problems after that.

Good luck...Bob

fuel pumps on that model will cause that problem. easy to check, remove the small hose 90 degree, at the rail and crank it, if no gas, your pump has probably failed. but also common on these is the cmp sensor, if you were driving the car when it happened, if the cmp sensor failed, there will be a code.

cranks, but won't start 850 1995

Same thing happened to my wife on the free way. Car stopped and had to towed it home. First I checked the sparks and there were there. Then I checked the fuse and was fine. I then remove the fuel line above crank cover and cranked the car. No fuel came out. I was sure it was a fuel pump. Just to check if it was a relay, I checked the power (12VDC) to the pump and 12VDC was there. I replaced the pump.
The pump costs $235 at local part store. Dealer sells it for $350. Good luck.

Hi all,

Fuel pump relay is a common problem. I have 192kmiles on mine and just replaced it for preventitive maintenace.
