Haynes manual says pull up to release from clips. Pulled at points where seat doesn't flex, till I'm red in the face. Don't really want to break anything. What's the secret? TIA

Try pulling-up at the bottom edge of the front corners of the seat on the cloth area (where the leather transitions to cloth). The seat on my '99 S70 pops right out with minimal effort. Pulling-up at the front of the seat where the actual hooks are does nothing. Now you have to answer my "removing the headrest" question that follows your post.
