Metallic whine on cold start V70-XC70 1998

Hello All,

I am a regular 240 frequenter but today I post for my dad. 1998 V70 AWD, canadian model with auto trans, 80,000 km (50,000 mi) and light pressure turbo.

The noise comes from the driver's side of the engine bay (ie - non belt side)and is an audible whine or whirr on the first start of the day. Stays for about 2-3 mins and then goes away. No codes or other driveability issues. No other signs of impending nastiness that I can detect.

Any ideas??? The car came off warranty last year and I'm trying to save dad a few bucks.

classic air pump sound...your motor is squealing because of poor Volvo design...Many many air pumps and check valves have been replaced on these models under the original warranty, and are now failing again in spite of fixing the original cause! This is just poor design. Late models no longer have these pumps. If your air pump motor seizes or draws too much amperage (and it may not until next winter), you will get a check engine light. Your car can't pass an emission test that way and you will be forced to have it repaired. But guess what? The air pump isn't covered under the extended emission warranty! This problem should be addressed by a Volvo recall. It is TOO WIDESPREAD.

if the noise is present only when the engine is cold(1st start of the day) and disappears when the engine is warm, this is normal according to my manual. It is the air pump blowing air into the exhaust for faster warm-up to reduce exhaust emmissions.

If the noise is on the very front left(drivers side), It is possibly the air pump that is about to go bad. Look at Bay13 at www.volvospeed.com. They have very nice instructions to repair. Mine just went out and am about to repair also. Your looking at about $500 U.S. to repair. I have a 98 V70 AWD also. sounds like a common problem with these miles. Mine just turned 89,000 miles. Still love the car though.

UPDATE - Sounds very much like some electric motor that is about to bite the biscuit... poked around and could not source it...

Hi, Springtime isn't it? the winter has taken a toll on our cars (air pumps full of water in particular)I had many post about this problem. I just changed it and the secondary air injection valve (Chech valve). Yes they deffinitly designed the quality out of this air pump. Do some searches here and aslo www-volvospeed.com, at the volspeed site see the airpump changeout procedure at Bay 13 site. (If you take the front plastic cowl off and maybe drill a very small hole at the lowest point and see how much water drains out? you may have to also drill one at the small end (motor side) no worries of drilling the motor... its' smaller than a pop can! about a quarter of an inch clearance here)
(fix it yourself , get the pump for about $360, verify the check valve operation.) I actually took the old one completely apar and would have changed just the electric motor if I could have found one? D~
