Replacement or repair: turbocharger 850 1994

Hello Listers-

My service technician recently informed me that the inner seals on my turbocharger for my 850 wagon are failing. I've been wiping up a few drops of oil on the floor for about a week, so I took it in today to see if the December repair of the O-ring for the oil return line had failed. Unfortunately, he says it's much more serious. (Like $1,300 bucks serious for a replacement).

The car has 178,000 miles on it, and I really want to keep it. I think that I can have it rebuilt, or find one on e-bay. Exactly what type of turbo is attached to the engine? An to-remain-anonymous internet source says it's a GARRETT AIR RESEARCH TBO 313. Another says it's a TD04hl-15g. Which is it?

Go to turbochargers.com and call them up. They sell brand new turbo for Volvo bolt on and upgrades starting at 650 dollars. Im have dead turbo on my 850 Turbo also a 94 but im upgrading to 1 with a 16g compressor wheel instead of the 15g thats stock. Thats gonna cost me 849.99 for a new 1 plus labor at my repair shop.

My 95 855T has a TD04HL-15G. My guess is it is the same in the 94.

The flat rate time to remove and reinstall is 4.9 hours according to Chilton. Volvo sells a remanufactured unit that was around $600 with exchange about 6 months ago. I pulled mine out because of a vibration which turned out ot be the bearing going bad at 128,000 miles. That cost $330 plus round trip shipping. I had and still have a small amount of oil forming at the bottom of the unit that drips now and then.

    Good luck.

    93 & 95 854 GLT, 95 855T
