Update on trouble codes P0133 and P0422 850 1996

A response to my previous post on this topic, dated May 6, indicated that both O2 sensors should be replaced, that the symptoms I described were common result of sensor failure. Replacement of the rear sensor (I had recently replaced the front) resulted in some modest improvement in MPG, but nothing else and the MIL again lit up after two days showing the same codes. So, I am still seeking useful input.

Did you replace the front sensor with a correct factory sensor? or did you use the cheaper universal sensor? The P0133 code is still the front sensor signal. The P0422 is the ECU's response to comparing the input 02 sensor (front one) to the output 02 sensor (rear one) and not being happy with the results. The resulting difference between the two signals tell the ECU the catalytic converter is crapped out. Do you suspect a problem with the converter? Do you have a rotten egg smell coming from the exhaust? I think I would try a factory spec 02 sensor in the frontside and see if that helps. Good luck ...... Mike

      Mike,

Thanks. I had used a generic sensor on the front and had been wondering if there might be an issue, though I was thinking it might have more to do with a poor connection at the splice. It would be nice if the codes were described a bit more explicitly as neither of them is obviously to do with O2 sensors. I've ordered a new front sensor, looking forward to it bringing an end to the problems.

I notice that after fixing the vac line on mine that the light came on.
After resetting the code it would come on about a tank.
I followed someones advice and reset the code then disconnected the battery for 30 minutes or so and now the light doesnt come on for a few tanks of gas.
I'll end up replacing the 02 sometime. But I did notice an extra 100km per tank by doing this also. (60mi)
