Succesful instalation of TRACS 850 1993

I installed the TRACS system into my 850 from another vehicle. I changed the ABS modulator and the ECU and connected the TRACS switch on the wiring that was already in my car. When I start the car the lights for ABS and TRACS go on, and after a few seconds they go off at the same time. The ABS seems to work fine (I can feel it work during braking on wet surfaces). The OBD does not report any errors. But when I turn on the TRACS system and accelerate sharply on wet surface, I do not feel any differnece. The wheels just spin just as they did before without TRACS. How do I know if the system really works or is TRACS just so lousy that I don't feel any difference.

Thanks for any suggestions

Marko

I totally concur with what everyone has experienced with 850's traction control. It only works at very low speeds, so it's not something that will help you get out of a spin at high speeds.

As for retrofitting it to an 850 that did not come stock with Tracs, I'm glad that you were able to make that happen. I always thought that if you change the ABS modulator and the Traction computer you'd be able to add this function.

Anyway, enjoy your new driving aid, hope it comes handy in the winter time.

    Congrats on the install.

The behavior of TRACS is not always predictable. The system works somewhat like ABS; that is, it senses difference in rotation rates of the front wheels. If both wheels are spinning, the system doesn't know that the car isn't moving forward as desired. Only when one wheel slips, and the other doesn't, will it brake the spinning wheel. TRACS is NOT a limited slip differential, and it does NOT actually give you more traction. In most cases like startup on snow, ice, sand, the Winter mode (3rd gear start) will be more effective.

Succesful instalation of TRACS? 850 1993

I had my doubts about the TRACS on my car, too, until I brought it in for service and the tech dopped the clutch and spun both front wheels moving it away from the service desk. We could tell because I had studded snow tires on the car and it ground TWO patches through the paint on the service department floor....

A part of the 850-70s problem is that it has relatively narrow tires for the size and power of the car, it's easy to spin front tires!

That's normal, for the ABS and Tracs lights to stay on for a few seconds after your car is on.

Regarding the effectiveness of Tracs: For me, it will only work under partial acceleration. So if I gun it on a slippery surface, it doesn't do anything. When it does work, there still seems to be a bit of wheel spin, but you still have some traction to go forward.
