How much trouble is it to put the Volvo trip computer in an 850 that doesn't have one? 850 1997

How much trouble is it to put the Volvo trip computer in an 850 that doesn't have one? Would it be worth the trouble?

    I have no idea how to install a trip computer, but I can say that they're nice to have: I recently went on a road trip, and used pretty much every feature of the trip computer. Especially nice is the average gas mileage feature, and the fact that you can reset everything to "zero" before a trip so as to figure out your average gas mileage, etc. for that particular trip.

    My car's a 97 850 GLT. Was the trip computer included only on certain years or models?

      It was standard on earlier 850 Turbos, and available on others as a dealer installed option. The later 850's and S70 came with it built in to the cluster, but some models required electronic PIN activation by the dealer.

    Physically, it's not that hard. But...

    1. You need to make sure you get the exact part numbers with the right connectors. There are some subtle variations over the years and also for NA vs. turbo.

    2. In addition, some later models (1997?) may require a Volvo scan tool to complete the installation. This is a usually dealer-only procedure.

    Definitely consult with your parts counter and service advisor.
