GLT blown head gasket S70 1999

My 1999 V70 GLT blew the head gasket Sunday. 53K miles, properly maintained. I'm sure the temp gauge ran hot, but wife didn't notice. The low coolant lamp never illuminated. So, she drove it and got it really hot before the car shut down on its own. Now the service manager is saying the head and at least the rings are junk. Can anyone shed any light on this situation, particularly any help that Volvo NA might provide? Thanks, Kevin in Nashville.

Also, is a 98 GLT long block interchangeable with a 99?

Time for another shop. I've done the work before several times and you won't need rings at all. The cylinder head is warped from the heat (overheated) and will need to be straightened by a machine shop. It won't be a cheap repair BUT you won't need to have anything done with the lower end, like rings, etc.

      Frank,

One more thing. Just prior to shutting down on its own, the oil pressure light came on, then seconds later the engine quit. Smoke was coming from under the hood and out the tail pipe. Have you seen one get this hot and still be ok? Service manager is talking complete new engine, claiming at least the rings have lost temper.

I found a used 20K motor for $1600. I just have some decisions to make.

      Thanks again, Kevin

Thanks for the reply. This thing got really hot, enough to damage the plastic cover on the valve cover.

The machine shop is saying the head is warped too badly to just machine flat, but they can "straighten" it and then machine it. Does this sound like what you are talking about.

      Thanks again, Kevin

Yep, I've seen just that and not long ago. The shop is trying to "cover their butts" by condemning the rings, etc BUT chances are good that once the head is fixed, it'll be OK. The last one I saw got so hot that the machine shop said it was the worst they've ever seen, actually twisted and that it'd cost $1000 to fix.
IF the engine did get hot enough, it's possible that the rings and cylinder walls got too hot thus damaged and if so, it's then possible that you'll be consuming more oil and before so it's a gamble that you'ld have to take and without seeing the engine myself, I can't tell you how to proceed.
