service engine light S70 1998

I recently bought 98 s70 glt w/80k miles. The service engine light came on, took it back to dealer, was told it was a misfire code, it was reset. Light came on again, got second opinion. Was told it was a code for an emissions system pump that adds air while the engine is cold to reduce emissions. The pump is seized from taking in water. Expensive to fix. (approx. $500) Said it would do no harm to NOT fix it as it would probably fail again because of a bad design with the pump being situated too low and taking in water. Said that the design was used for 2 years and alot of 98's have the same problem. However, the service light remains on all the time and if something else should go wrong I'll never know it.

Has anyone else experienced this or am I being fed a line of BS? Should this thing be fixed??

Thanks

Yes, it's a lousy design. (There are many others in your Volvo that you will discover!) In the grand scheme of Volvo ownership, $500 is about a minimal-cost Volvo repair. Yes, I'd fix it because the pump is there for a reason, namely to reduce emissions, and because I and most everyone else has to breathe the air. Unlike some here (typically, and amazingly, it's usually the tree-hugging 240 liberals) who think it's a badge of honor to drive an ancient Volvo that belches smoke like a 19th century steam locomotive, I think this is a bad idea. If your state requires emissions testing your car will fail testing if the "check engine" light is on.

Since semi's and dump trucks are exempt from emissions testing then I wouldn't worry about the pollution from your volvo. If it's not hurting anything mechanical then why rush? Is not seeing a check engine light worth $500?

I have seen cases where an inoperable air pump has caused o2 sensor failure and eventually a plugg catalytic converter. Get it fixed....

That's what I was afraid of, along with the fact that if something else happens that would trigger the light, I wouldn't know it since it is already on, possibly leading to major damage. BTW, it PASSED state inspection in NJ with the light on, I was hoping it would fail and force the dealer to have to fix it.

          Thanks for the reponses.
