Broken 2000 v70 cargo cover V70-XC70 2000

Hi -

The retractable factory model cargo cover on my 2000 v70 has broken. The other day, when I went to pull it out to cover the cargo area, there was a loud "snap" sound, followed by a rapid unravelling sound, and then after that the cover doesn't really self-retract, it seems to have no real power at all, almost as though some spring or something has broken.

The plastic end cap on the right side of the cover mechanism has come off, and it looks like there is a plastic piece inside the cap that has broken, a piece which seems to have previously engaged the retractable cover mechanism.

Is this a common problem? It isn't covered under warranty because it is two years old. Is is practical, or even possible, to repair these? A new cover costs more than $200, so I don't want to just go out and buy a new one if I could reasonably repair it myself.

Thanks,
Tim

Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to respond to my message. The eBay item to which you referred me would be perfect, except that it is not the right color - the item on eBay is beige in color, and I need one that is black or very dark gray.

Best regards,
Tim

I have the same car. Question, my cargo net extends from the top of the back seat to the ceiling (either side attaches to the side wall of the car). The net will pull back to the rear hatch revealing a solid cover, but I cannot find out where to attach it to. Does it sound like I have the same net as you do? Thanks, brad

>>Does it sound like I have the same net as you do?<<

No, it sounds like something different. The item that I was writing about is a solid rollup cover, not a net with holes in it.

My rollup cover "hooks" to little notches that are in the plastic trim strip around the back hatch. I believe that those notches resulted from the installation of special segments of trim strip that were installed as part of the installation of the cargo cover by the dealer, two years ago.

Thanks,
Tim
