Cleaning brake dust from wheel rims 850 1996

What works the best to get that baked on brake dust off the wheels on my '96 turbo wagon?

Thanks

The new Eagle cleaner should work great. Just be sure you are getting the WHEEL CLEANER and not just "brake parts cleaner" which is not meant for finished surfaces, just brake maintenance. You're really "brave" if you use any kind of spray lubricant near your disc brakes.

I pressure wash my wheels each season then clean them with paint thinner. It is gentle to the clear coat on the rims. Wheel washing solutions often contain lye or some other strong base that eats the clear coat off.

I then wax them with Meguire's #26 yelow wax, which is just wax, no cleaner.

I do both sides of each wheel, and end up with a LOT of soiled rags, even after a pressure wash.

If you only have one car, you are lucky, 20 wheels each season is crazy!

Eagle One makes a good wheel cleaner. There are other brands that are probably as good.

I asked the same question here and the answer I got was to spray the wheels with "Simple Green" before you wash the car. It works well with the loose stuff but I don't think it will remove the baked on dust. I used to own a Suzuki 4X4 with white rims and every spring I was clean them up with spray -on oven cleaner. It worked like a charm and didn't hurt the paint (they looked like new after 10 years). If your brave enough, you might try that on a small section.

I use a tip from this site which suggested WD40.Cleans and shines the alloys nicely and,(being careful not to get any on the discs)if you work it in with an old toothbrush, it will remove the baked on bits.

I've gone with the WD-40 before and the Eagle one cleaner, both are good... remember that it will take some elbow grease to get a good result... and with WD-40 you have to be careful not to spray your brakes. even some basic car wash solutions have worked well if you take your time, such as rain-x branded car-wash solutions....

also big thing when cleaning the wheels.... DO IT IN THE SHADE WHEN THEY ARE COOL TO THE TOUCH!!!
