Rubberized Flat-black paint for the roof moulding? 850

I know that there have been all kinds of fixes on this board for remedying
the peeling roof molding strips but has anyone heard of a rubberized type
paint I could buy maybe in a can, that stays flexible? I think I am just
going to try and clean up the old strips, mask the car finish and paint those
bad boys.

    Sounds like the vinyl would be a pretty good fix, but here's an alternative. I also contemplated various possible fixes for my moulding. I peeled off all the old tape and sanded the metal clean with the intention of painting it, but once I got it clean, I decided I liked it as bare metal. I took some steel wool to buff it up a bit, and left it natural. It might not look good with some colors, but I like it with my white.

    Hi Mr. Detail,

    I bought some rubberized black paint at my local auto parts and that paint has been designed specifically for rocker panels. It's paintable(when dry), stay "flexible", resists chipping and the one I bought is made in Canada by Dominion Sure Seal Ltd. I painted both strips with that paint and it looks just fantastic. Remove the roof molding strips, sand the old vinyl off and clean the rubber edges with isopropanol (concentrated isopropyl alcohol) just before painting.

    Rubberized Flat-black paint for the roof moulding? 850

    About 4 months ago I looked at an 850 I was considering buying. I made a mental note about the peeling of the moulding.

    I have a sign business in addition to other businesses. When I looked at the car I mentioned, I thought about removing the peeling material and apply exterior grade black sign vinyl (I even thought about using a color to match the paint of the car), the vinyl material is about 4 mil thick and it applies directly on the metal (the surface needs to be wiped with alcohol to remove grease and other deposits), there is no need to prime, it is flexible and still feel rubbery as the original material.
    The product may be purchased at any sign supply store or, if anybody is interested, I may be able to cut and supply the strips to you.

    I didn't purchase the car, the owner destroyed too many things and lied one too many times so I passed.

      I just dont' think this would look good. I too own a sign shop and a 850 with peeling. I thought of the vinyl but there is no way it would look good enough. You would be able to tell it's vinyl attached to it, just thought I would let you all know that this is NOT something I would do to my car. We are thinking of having Volvo replace them, the total cost including labor is $300. We were going to remove them is it very hard?

      Vitor;
      I would definitely be interested in having you supply me with some strips.
      Not sure at this moment without measuring what the length and width would
      need to be. How is it possible to cut one continuous length of the material you are speaking of? It will probably need to be 7-8 feet in length.
      Any idea what the cost will be?

        I own a 95 850T, let me look at mine, I will measure and then we can confirm to see if they are the same as yours.
        I purchase the material in 50 yds roll, I use a Graphtec plotter for all my cutting work.
        Once the material is cut, it would resemble a thick stripe.

          What is the latest on figuring out the cost Vitor? Have you had a chance to
          look into this yet? Let me know when you get the time.
          Thanks!

          Vitor;
          Just went outside and measured my molding. It would seem that my 1995 850 GLT
          has strips that measure .812" wide by 6 feet, 11.75" long. Obviously you could round off the length to 7 feet.

          Vitor:
          Does the material have a sticky backing on it of some kind?
          Just curious as to how it adheres.

            Yes, it has industrial strenght adhesive. It is very good, we use it for outdoor graphics.

    Don't know about rubberized paint, but use primer with regular paint 850

    If you use regular paint, clean and prime the area first. The molding is made of steel (I think) and covered with vinyl. A primer is a better adhesive than the actual paint/pigment.

    I am not sure if rubberized paint, by itself, will adhere well or not, on steel.

    It's easier to remove the roof molding strips first. Just start from the rear and remove the plastic end caps; they're just stuck on the car with double-stick tape. The molding is held in place with clips along the roof track. Just lift the molding and it'll pop out. I used a sander to remove the old plastic cover; primered and spray-painted with a flat black paint. I'll probably do it again soon because I was lazy and only sprayed a few coats.

    I haven't heard of a rubberized paint but others have used "high-temperature" spray paints, the kind that they use to paint engines or barbeque grills.
