Air Conditioner Cuts Out V70-XC70 2001

I have a 2001 V70 T5. The air conditioner will cut out intermittently. Warm air will start to blow out and then a minute or two later the cold air comes back. Seems to happen when the car is moving. I have the same problem with my 96 850. The local Volvo dealer cannot seem to figure out the problem in either car. Can anyone provide any input?
Thank you

Low AC refrigerant level can also cause this. When the level is low the
compressor works harder and eventually shuts off for a while. My
98 is currently doing this. I plan to have the refrigerant evacuated
and recharged back to the correct amount. Having a pack of flourecent dye
added at this time is also a good idea since that will help trace down any
future (inevitable) leaks.

Common problem is a defective thermoswitch in the compressor. It happens more often when the ambient temperature is warmer and you are not moving fast enough for the air to cool the compressor. It cannot be repaired and will happen more often and at lower ambiant temperatures after a while. The compressor must be replaced @ $800+. This is obviously a poor design when a ten dollar switch that is designed to save a $800 compressor ends up being the reason to replace the compressor.

I have a 99 S80, which also has a similar problem with the A/C.
After about 20 minutes highway driving, the A/C begins to blow white smoke, then cuts out, blowing warm air.

I've had it to the dealership several times and they have not been able to isolate the problem.

Is there a way to test the thermal switch? Inorder to isolate to it?

Or is more of try everything else; if that doesn't fix it, it must be the compressor/thermalswitch?

DJ

I don't know if this will be much help-
The "white smoke" suggests that your evaporator is freezing. The expansion valve is supposed to prevent that, and if you get get evaporator freezing, you probably have a bad expansion valve. HOWEVER, Volvo uses an orifice tube, not an expansion valve. I do not know if a plugged orifice tube will cause the same thing.
