I have a 1995 850 Turbo Wagon with 107K miles. I need to find out what the recommended mileage intervals are for flushing the tranny, cooling system, and the brake fluid. Tranny was last flushed on 7/01 at 83K, coolant flush and new thermostat was done on 1/02 at 90K. Brake fluid was also flushed at 90K. Is it time again or can I let it go for awhile? Any experienced advise is appreciated.

I use Mobil 1 ATF and flush it every 60 - 70,000 km. Cooling system is filled with Dexcool (long life) and I plan to keep it there for 4-5 years. Brakes I flush every two years just to make sure that not only the brake fluid is fresh but also to excercise the nipples (they tend to freeze).

I do them anually, because it's cheap maintenance.

1. Volvo doesn't recommend flushing the tranny, but most experienced folks will suggest doing it every 30,000.

2. Volvo doesn't recommend flushing the cooling system either. People disagree on this one. The old rule of thumb was to flush every two years, but modern formulations can go longer. A reasonable interval may be 3-5 years, or whenever you have to change the thermostat, water pump, hoses, etc.

3. Volvo does recommend bleeding the brake fluid every two years. Most other manufacturers do not have this requirement, but Volvo's ABS systems, especially the earlier ones, can be sensitive to excessive moisture in the fluid (which happens naturally over time). I recommend you follow the two year maintenance, and don't mess with brakes.

On the contrary, Volvo does, and their dealer does, recommend changing transmission fluid every 20,000 miles.

You must have a different maintenance manual than I do for my 1995 850 (USA model). Mine says to "inspect" the tranny fluid every 10k. No specific interval for replacing or even criteria for inspecting. As far as dealer recommendations, those are all over the board, and in a best case, result from good judgement based on experience. But don't leave your brain in neutral while visiting the dealer service dept.
