adding a trip computer 1996

i have a 96 NA 850. I want to add a trip computer, however i am confused as to if there are 2 differnt trip computers? This website lists 2 part numbers, http://www.volvoworld.com/index.html however they also say the one for the 96 is the same as for the s/v 70 which makes no sense since the s/v 70 you just need a pin code and switch.

im trying to figure out, is there 2 differnt trip computers for the 850 or is there just one, and the other one listed there is the code and switch for the s/v cars.

i called volvoworld they dont have it so i cant get it from there. i have located a surplus one but its from a 94 so i dont know if it will work or not.

i do know there were two differnt guage layouts, and i know i have a VDO on a 96, however will the trip computer work from a 94?

thanks

    adding a trip computer 850 1995

The 850 comes with 2 different dashboards. Most likely, but not necessary, that NA version of the 850 came with Yazaki dashboard. My 1995 855 NA came with Yazaki dash. The 1995 GLT and Turbo models came with VDO dashboard. Only VDO dashboard can install the trip computer because VDO dashboard has a computer/microcontroller build in to interface to the trip computer. After the installation of trip computer by yourself, you still have to take the car to dealer to "turn it on".

There were multiple different part numbers over the years. The variations include turbo vs. NA and even some changes within a model year. I know the small harness that connects the display unit to the cluster can be different also. You probably need to consult with a dealer parts counter to make sure you get exactly the right thing for your VIN.

i allready have the proper part on order, i found a salvage dash from the same year same aspriation. It has a trip built in, im just going to take that and use it.

fyi my 96 has a VDO dash.

i dont know about activation, i do know that the 98 and newer s/v cars have the display in there and all you need is a switch and a pin number.

Never heard of anyone needing a pin number for 850s.

i was just asking about location and pinout of the actual switch on the dash.
