Engine still revs up when first started.... 850 1996

Our turbo wagon revs up to 2200 or so for a few seconds then back to normal idle when first started. I've checked all the vacuum lines I could find and cleaned throttle body per suggestions, but still the same thing.

It's always done this since we bought at 70k mileage. Is this normal? Seems like it shouldn't do that.

I have the same trouble - 1994 T5 and so does a colleague - 1996 T5. Mine didn't always do it, it is not good for the engine to do this. must get a solution.

I have a '95 850 Wagon and mine has done that sense day one. A Volvo tech. explained it to me and it goes somthing like this: blah...blah...yada...yada...it's normal and it will not hurt your engine. And don't touch the gas pedal before or during crancking. Good enough for me. I've goten used to it and it doesn't bother me any more.

Mine does this - sometimes - but I think it's usually when the edge of my Size-13 is resting on the gas pedal.

This sometimes happens when I start my wife's Honda Oddy, too. Never with the ancient (and tiny) Porsche 944, tho.

It is normal. My 97 850-R has done it since new. I think maybe why it does this is because when the engine first fires up it is running extremely rich since it is cold and so the computer is compensating for the rich mixture until it runs sufficiently well. All of this takes only a few seconds.

my 850 t5 does this, the only way to stop it is to turn the engine over a few times DON'T LET IT START!! and then start it like normal, this stops the over revving and any damage that might be happening.

Dosn't this also cause the engine to have to crank longer without lubrication?

Lest ye forget that the oil check valve keeps oil in the engine.

The rude comment was not necessary. It is a matter of fact that the oil filter uses a backflow valve to keep oil in the engine for better startup performance. I was trying to be nice about it, --you weren't.

Whoa... You've got me all wrong. I was *not* trying to be rude. I was paying you a compliment. You are obviously more knowledgeable of 850 engines than I am. I was simply admitting my fault, and your correctness.

In all honesty, since this is my first 850, and first glimpse at the DOHC engines, I'll be relying on you (and others like you) for technical information.

I appologise for any insult you may have taken.
