Whats this thing?? 850

Dear All

I have found some cylindrical shaped 'thing' attatched to the top left corner of the the airfilter box. There appears to be a vacuum line at one end of the cylinder and another vacuum line comes out of the bottom of it.

Then at the opposite end are two electrical wires.

I am baffled, what is it? The whole thing is small, perhaps two inches long, and is located at the top left of the airbox (I don't think it has anything to do with the air box) as you look from under the hood facing the car.

If anyone knows???

If your car's a turbo, from what you describe, it's the turbo's wastegate controller. The ECU regulates boost by contolling vacumn on the wastegate diaphragm through this device.

(If I'm remembering correctly. I haven't used or tinkered with my 855t in several months.)

Why Volvo put it on the airbox and not on the firewall is beyond me. With my limited skills it's a PITA to mount on the box. Apparantly, it's tough for the dealership mechanics also as they left it hanging by it's 3 hoses when the previous owner had it serviced.

    Most likely MAF 850

Yes, I think it is MAF too, mounted on the air cleaner cover. It sends the air intake mass information (analog signal) to MFI (milti port fuel injector computer/module). This module converts it to digital signal and sends it to the ICM and TCM computers.

Yes I see where the MAF is! But this thing is screwed to the lower part of the airbox. It is very small - I am sorry my describtion is weak - but it definately has two vacuum lines attatched one clear and one black.

I am going to remove it and see what it is.

        VIS solenoid 850

        VIS

        What I found from AllData:

If it is connected to a non-return valve (aka check valve the one you replaced) then it is a solenoid which is part of the Variable Intake System (VIS). It is operated by ICM, activated between an 1800 – 4200 rpm range and throttle open signal. This solenoid opens and closes the vacuum line form the engine.

Wow, sounds like you got it!! Yep the check valve is there, thanks.

I appreciate it. Did you find ALLdata through the internet?

            AllData.com 850

Yes. Very cheap, one of the best $25 I have ever spent (www.alldata.com). Print as much you want since it is hard to navigate and find information you are looking for.

However, you will not get every information about the car but enough to mesmerize you.
