Front End Clunk (Could be called Cluck as well...) 850

Whenever my front passenger side tire goes over a bump that the other side didn't get, I hear a clunky noise... It's kinda squeaky too. Either way, I "bumped" the two front corners. The driver's side is quiet, but the passenger side makes a sucking noise coming back up.

This is my first 850... and my first week of ownership. I checked the air conditioner during test drives, as well as the suspension by driving through a rough street. This problem has shown up in the last 500 miles, in the last couple of weeks.

What could this problem be, how long could the vehicle be driven, and how much does it usually cost to fix.

Clunking fixed. 850

Mine's been clunking too,got progressively worse over the last year.Just had it fixed yesterday, turned out to be the sway bar struts. All the research I did here and elsewhere pointed to sway bar links or bushes,I'm ignorant about the difference between the three of them but I'm glad it's fixed at last-I've got a quiet car again. Hallelujah!

Rick.

May not help you much..it was $169 Australian.I picked it up late last night so I didn't get to ask the mech. if he used Volvo or a substitute part,I asked him to try to use OEM.Incidentally, take your car to someone you trust.I tried a "new" Volvo guy and he's been stuffing around with this one mysterious clunk for over a year,in the end I took it to a well known Volvo indy who I first started using 11 years ago, he found and fixed the problem straight away.

Haven't really thought about whether "it" is a him or her. It's got a fair bit of grunt so I would lean toward the masculine. I'm curious, why the morbid name "cancerman"?

Good luck.

My car:

Around here anyway, it's customary to think of a car as a her.

We have a local Volvo specialist that appears to work out of his home.

My name:

I used to be a die-hard fan of The X-Files... I'm sure you have it in Oz, but just in case, it's a show about aliens, government conspiracies, and Big Foot (The Sasquatch, not the monster truck). I also use several IRC networks, where the nick "FoxMulder" is extremely hard to keep. I found that simply changing my nick to "CancerMan" stopped those annoying 500Mb/s ping floods, and better suited my personality anyway.

Either way, I havn't seen the show in forever, and have since then found a new obsession... You guessed it, Volvos. I don't get my own culture (Merkin) sometimes... We're not to bat an eye at a dual-holley El-Camino, but a turbocharged station-wagon blows people's minds. Of course, I still think the out-moted DMC-12 is cool.

There are many parts that can produce noise (probably all of them:-).
My experience was with worn sway bar links - they do clunk when you go over a bump. Parts are some $20 (more for genuine Volvo), easy to replace with car's front lifted.
I had very worn ball joints and they did not make any noise. Sucking sound comes from the struts, but it might be normal.
