Engine cuts out under acceleration V70-XC70 1998

My 1998 V70XC will cut out under acceleration when using half-throttle or more. This does not happen all of the time, but when it does the tach drops by 1000-3000 RPM immediately and then the engine will come and go a few times before resuming acceleration. The whole process usually lasts only about 2-3 seconds and then the car runs fine.

Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do to rectify it? Merging into traffic is becoming an interesting experience.

I am also looking at a '98 XC, and have read here on one of the boards (here or Volvospeed or Swedespeed) that some of the people running aftermarket chips have had this problem......some sort of stumble under acceleration which plagued early V70s. Volvo reflashed the ECUs in most of those cars when they were under warranty, but when people are chipping them or having them re-flashed, they are losing the ECU update that Volvo installed, and they get the stumble back. Lots of people with the Wetterhauser (sp?) chip seem to have the problem.

I'm not an expert here, in fact, I'm looking at V70 XC's. However, check out the red '98 or '99 V70R XC on ebay motors at some dealership in Jersey. It has 49K miles on it. Go down into the explanation of the auto and it's a lemon law car that Volvo had to reposess from the customer over transmission and stalling problems. They replaced the transmission, cleaned up the throttle assembly and re-did some throttle software. It's worth taking a look.
