!997 850 R Engine oil capacity?? Faulty Dipstick? 850

My manual calls for 5.6 quarts with filter change. However when I change the oil and filter, and refill with 5.6 quarts, the dipstick reads halfway between the 2 hash marks. Is the dipstick wrong?

I have an 850 model glt manual says 5.6qts of oil (same was on the valvoline oil changestation-according to their manuals ,but when oil was changed dipstick showed : not full ) so added to full condition came out 6,5qts US ( 6,5 US qts was on the american car care center so whom to believe ?choice is yours but i filled my engine till dipstick was "full".running good.

my 97 turbo is the same way, so i always add a extra 1/2 quart when i do my oil change, i use mobil1 and want to keep the turbo nice and lubed.

i always go by the assumption that full is not between the lines full is at the top line, between the lines to me means that is in the serviceable operating range but not full

i like a full oil capacity not a almost full one

When reading the dipstick on ANY engine, FULL means FULL SO the manual is incorrect. Volvo has always had that little problem as all Volvo engines take a bit more oil than book specs to actually read FULL on their dipsticks.
Add the amount needed so that the dipstick reads full, more like 6.5 US qts with a new filter.

No,the dipstick isn't wrong. The Volvo manual says that the oil reading should be between the two marks,so you are spot on.
Rick.
