Overheated. Water Pump? 850 1993

I was driving home today at lunch and when I was stopped at a stop light I noticed steam coming out from under the hood and my temp gauge was pegged. I was almost home so I just cranked my heat and cruised home. When I got there I popped the hood to see that my overflo tank was boiling over. My radiator fan continued to run after shutting off the car so I know that is working. Did my water pump go out? Could it possibly only be the thermostat that went? If it is the water pump, is that an easy job to do myself or should I have it towed into the shop? Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks

The Volvo water pump can fail, but the symptom is a leak. Otherwise, it is built like a tank, and is very unlikely to stop pumping. Probably the thermostat.

    "...was almost home..."

What does this mean? 100 ft?, 1/2 mile? 5 miles?

If the problem was a stuck thermostat, turning on the heat would not have done much.

If the problem is a stuck thermostat, change it and do an oil change, and monitor the car carefully for a while.

most likely it thermosatat, mine stuck about 4 months ago, but itwas early in the morning and i had just left home and was like 2 miles away when i saw the temp needle climbing so i pulled over and shut her down. drove no farther. changed thermostat and all is well, my car never actually boiled over.

got the part from O'Reilly for about 12.95, they offered a fail safe thermostat that fails to the open position for about 20.00 but of course it was special order and out of stock.

might be a good idea to get the fail safe type with our engines being all aluminum.
