jUST GOT a 850 GLT AND ITS IN GREAT CONDTION, bUT ONE OF THE LITTLE THINGS bugging me IS THE Cd changer, it skips on bumps and when braking.

Volvo offers an exchange plan for $345-$375 depending on the model.
But was wondering who makes their cd changer and if on of another brand might work or convert?

I want to still use the OEM radio controls.

Any suggestions.

Thanks Joe M.

I was recently rear-ended in my '91 940 Turbo, totaling the car. (My Alpine cd changer was attached to the rear deck.) We took out the changer and installed it in the replacement 850 Turbo but it also skipped over bumps and such. The stereo shop told me the collision damaged the alignment, and since it was already adjusted for maximum horizontal alignment, I would need to have it repaired ($250) or buy new ($230). I chose the Alpine S630 model which is completely compatible with the car's 811 Premium Sound radio. Oh, yeah, my insurance company failed to list the aftermarket changer in the settlement, so they sent me a check that nearly covered the replacement. Sounds great and no skipping. If I weren't still grieving over my cherry red 940, I'd be a happy camper.

It should be an Alpine which has been slightly altered (different pin-outs on connectors) to make it Volvo OEM. You can watch eBay for direct Volvo replacements which come up regularly, or you can switch to an Alpine and buy a conversion cable for around $20.

The Alpine changer has an adjustment on the shock dampeners that is set for horizontal/vertical installation. Be sure they are set for the mounting you have. I just installed a Volvo changer in my '96 850 Turbo this past weekend, and it skipped until I changed the dampeners from vertical to horizontal mount.

Hope this helps.

JBB,

Where is this vertical/horizontal adjustment located? Outside? Inside? My Alpine is skipping too. Also, would it help if I put a spacer between the changer and the inside of the trunk (rather than have the changer screwed directly to the body)?

Thanks

The adjustments are on each side where the mounting brackets attach. Alpine has an on-line manual that shows this adjustment way better than I can explain. Click here and zoom in for the instructions.

My changer is also screwed directly into the rear deck. I considered using some sort of rubber shock moount, but this doesn't seem necessary so far.
