noise V70-XC70 1998

Upon starting the engine cold I hear a noise coming from the side of the engine opposite the timing belt and pulleys. It stops after a minute or so then it clicks back on as if it is thermostatically controlled. I have checked the fan but it is not comiong from there. It sounds like a bearing whine. It does not sound like the AC, what else is there on that side of the engine.

      indeed. i've replaced mine once in 184k mi and the used one i installed is going again. sounds a bit like a mini turbine. it usually runs for about 1-2 min after the car gets up to 10 or 12 mph. and then after medium to long runs at highway speeds when you slow or stop. btw, not a big deal to replace - it's bracket mounted right under the battery.
