Your dealer and mine must be related. I long ago learned that every warranty repair is a three step process. First step is ALWAYS denial of the problem ("cannot reproduce"). I think if left my car with a flat tire the reply would be the same. Second step is usually a superficial, ineffective repair, or "non-repair". Finally, at the third visit, most things are really fixed.
After 5 years of Volvo ownership (I had a S70 before the S80), I have learned to compress the three phases into 1.5 visits. Like Las Vegas, you have to adapt to the house rules to win.
First rule: put every complaint in writing, and describe how to reproduce it (if possible). Don't editorialize or embellish; keep it simple. Hand this sheet to the service writer, plus leave a copy in the car for the technicians.
Second rule: when making this service appointment (this is the 0.5 visit, because I always do it in person, not by phone), also ask for an appointment to demonstrate the problems to the Service Manager when you return with the car.
Third rule: offer to leave the car for more than one day, a week, or "as long as they need to duplicate and resolve the issue(s)". This conveys the impression you are serious and they don't have to rush to judgment near the end of the day. Incidently, in every case my car was repaired the same day.
Fourth and final rule: Always give top satisfaction ratings when subsequently contacted, regardless of actual satisfaction. A bad rating is a self-fulfilling prophecy for future visits. The lower the rating, the worse service you will receive next time. A very low rating means they will probably refuse to service your car at all.
I have seen 20-30 similar instances, on various S80 and S60 forums, of the intermittent door locking problem you described. My S80 does it about twice a year (not often enough to have it fixed yet). Only known fix is replacement of the lock assembly. Dealers hate to do this because Volvo will not reimburse them for the (expensive) part and labor if it works when subsequently tested in Sweden. So replacement is a "crap shoot" for them.
