2002 S80 2.9 door locks, wind noise, mirror pulsating S80 2002

Here is an outline of the three problems I asked the dealer to repair today, none of which were fixed:
1) Driver's door will unlock itself immediately after locked (alarm still arms as if nothing happened). Intermittant. They were unable to reproduce the problem. I would have ignored it if this problem had happened only once, but I've seen it happen multiple times.
2) Wind noise from the moonroof at highway speeds with shade opened and moonroof closed. It's like the seal is not sealing--if I press up on the glass, the noise worsens. They were unable to reproduce the problem.
3) Glass on driver's mirror vibrates at highway speed, as if the teeth in the power adjusting mechanism don't have enough bite to hold it steady in wind turbulence. The passenger's mirror doesn't do this (I confirmed this by sitting in the passenger's seat). They were unable to reproduce the problem.

They kept the car for four hours, and the only thing that was fixed were some loose clips on the left decklid speaker. Has anyone had these problems, and what was the fix? Is it time to find a new dealer?

Thanks in advance,
segfault

I just read this. I would like to add, the sunroof noise on my s80 will go away when I move the power button forward or back just a little bit, can not remember, it's my wife's car, don't get to drive it much. Hope this helps.

I can only respond to your wind noise from the sunroof. My problem with the sunroof was that it rattled over bumps only when closed. The fix was a replacement of the sunroof itself i.e. the glass portion. It seems that the new glass is of a heavier weight than the OEM which made it overall heavier thereby reducing vibration. Or so they told me. This should also help with your wind noise. Since that fix, no problems.

Your dealer and mine must be related. I long ago learned that every warranty repair is a three step process. First step is ALWAYS denial of the problem ("cannot reproduce"). I think if left my car with a flat tire the reply would be the same. Second step is usually a superficial, ineffective repair, or "non-repair". Finally, at the third visit, most things are really fixed.
After 5 years of Volvo ownership (I had a S70 before the S80), I have learned to compress the three phases into 1.5 visits. Like Las Vegas, you have to adapt to the house rules to win.

First rule: put every complaint in writing, and describe how to reproduce it (if possible). Don't editorialize or embellish; keep it simple. Hand this sheet to the service writer, plus leave a copy in the car for the technicians.

Second rule: when making this service appointment (this is the 0.5 visit, because I always do it in person, not by phone), also ask for an appointment to demonstrate the problems to the Service Manager when you return with the car.

Third rule: offer to leave the car for more than one day, a week, or "as long as they need to duplicate and resolve the issue(s)". This conveys the impression you are serious and they don't have to rush to judgment near the end of the day. Incidently, in every case my car was repaired the same day.

Fourth and final rule: Always give top satisfaction ratings when subsequently contacted, regardless of actual satisfaction. A bad rating is a self-fulfilling prophecy for future visits. The lower the rating, the worse service you will receive next time. A very low rating means they will probably refuse to service your car at all.

I have seen 20-30 similar instances, on various S80 and S60 forums, of the intermittent door locking problem you described. My S80 does it about twice a year (not often enough to have it fixed yet). Only known fix is replacement of the lock assembly. Dealers hate to do this because Volvo will not reimburse them for the (expensive) part and labor if it works when subsequently tested in Sweden. So replacement is a "crap shoot" for them.

Thanks for your comments. The service I have received is completely unacceptable for a brand that bills itself as "premium." I've never gotten a follow-up survey, but will confirm it's anonymous before giving them a piece of my mind!

I am sure they are under pressure to limit warranty costs, but I think the underlying problem is that no one at my dealership seems to give a darn. Considering the sparsity of Volvo dealerships, this is extremely irritating. I can deal with a bad product or a bad dealer, but not both at the same time!

Also, there is a loud rattling sound from under the hood immediately after the car is turned off, for about 2 seconds. Is this normal?

Thanks again,
segfault
