Control A arms noise 850 1994

I have been hearing from the first day I own my 850 a slight metalic noise from the suspension when riding over bumps.

I have realized the noise comes from two small clips mounted in control A arms (one clamp in each arm). I reproduced the noise touching the clips with my hand. So it seems a minor problem because they are mounted correctly but with certain clearance (I dont know if it is normal) which produces the clicking noise.

And now the questions:

Is that clearance (and the noise) usual?
Which is the function of those small clips??? Can I remove them without consequences?

Thanks in advance.

    Kalas:

Maybe I am wrong, but isn't that the steering stop or limiter? You are supposed to lubricate it and the matching point on the inside of the wheel with heavy duty axle grease. For details read: http://volvospeed.com/steerstops.htm

Yes, may be, thanks a lot.

But it seems different from mine in which it is a metal piece. Perhaps have the arms lost the supposed rubber or "felt" stop???

I sold my 850 so can't verify, but I don't recall the clips on mine...that's when I took the control arm off to replace it and also with the replacement piece. If it comes off easily, take it off and see what's under it. If nothing, I don't see that not having the clips on will hurt anything. If anyone disagrees, please chime in. I suppose the bushings and balljoint are okay? If they aren't there will be signs of swelling cracks or deterioration of the rubber. In pre-'94 models the control arms are aluminum (not good) so only the ends can be replaced (with a hybraulic press) unless the aluminum is bent, but with '94 and beyond the whole piece is steel and the ends can't be replaced...the whole A-arm has to be. Hope some of this information helps.

      Hi

From the picture it looks like (but I could be wrong) the place the felt pads are fitted to, these stop that grinding noise when you have full lock on.

I have a 93 model and I know the bushings can be replaced but can I update them with the 'whole A arm assembly'? Would it last longer than the aluminum ones?

      Matt

The Haynes Manual says they are not compatible...sorry...as for the "felt" piece...I do recall some rubber on the A-arm now...they must have switched the piece from felt to rubber after some year...a good idea I would say.
