Body Roll - Design or Old Age ? 850 1996

There is some body roll in our 850 1996. Like other FWD cars I had, it is quite stable as long as I push the accelerator, e.g. when starting to change lanes. The problem comes when I lift my foot from the accelerator, for example after successfully going through a tight corner. The car swings wildly, as if all that weight sitting on the front axe is trying to find its correct position. The power steering also has a heavy feeling to it. Nothing like the perfect balance of the 22-year old 244 I've disposed off last year.

Since we bought the 850 second-hand, I'm unable to tell how much of this is due to wear and tear, and how much is inherent to the FWD design. Was the body roll present when the car was new ?

Is it worth spending, can this be repaired ? ( Being a company car, the repairs are tax deductable, but not the purchase cost. ) I don't want any after-market mods, unless they are well tested. Just plain maintenance.

I've taken the 850 to the most expensive Volvo garage in town, spent $1100 on break disks, gas leak, and oil change. They haven't indicated anything wrong with steering, despite me being in obviously generous mood.

I still think we made a good deal, considering that we had to buy a car as a matter of emergency. The wife likes the classy look, and I'm happy to know she's protected by all that Sweedish steel. After half a dose of Wynn's Spitfire and Injector Cleaner, the engine came back to life in a wonderful fashion. Paying $11,000 with 124,000Km on board was worth it. This is Australia, with our dollar being only two-thirds of the $US.

Body Roll - Design or Old Age ? 850 1996

When I bought my 855t I posted here about how strange it handled when pushed. Lot's of body roll and while the initial turn-in was quick, the response wasn't linear and I was left sawing at the wheel until I became used to it. Mine is stock with 16" Bridgesone RE730s so it wasn't going to slide but it sure felt like it was going to come around or roll a few times.

The situation you describe could also be due in part to the effects of (minimal assuming it's an auto) front wheel drive engine braking. I don't think there's anything to "fix" on your car and the problems of designing a reliable swaybar for the delta-link rear end have been mentioned. The 850's ride is firm, especially with 16" wheels and lowering the car will likely make if harder. If you can live with that, the lower CG and body roll might suit you.

I have to say I much prefer my '88 745t's cornering manners over my 855t. The 745t is stock with the exception of IPD's front and rear sway bars. They truly transformed the car. Being RWD, the steering is light, being a manual, the engine braking affects the rear of the car, not the front.

If only I had the B5234t's power in the 745t....

i think what u are experiencing is the oversteer tendency when u either brake or lift off the gas mid-corner... just something the 850 does...

there is only one company i know of that makes sway bars for the 850, and that's ipd. it runs around 300. however, due to the tremendous stress from the placement of the rear sway bar on the delta link suspension by volvo's engineer, they have gone thru 3 designs and all have failed some way or another. they are on their 4th design (i had the #2 brake, on the #3 now). they do offer lifetime warranty, that's the good thing.

if u don't want to go the aftermarket method. u can try a number of bars from volvo. the sport suspension has larger front and rear bars than stock, and if u have a wagon, well there is no rear bar unless it's a t5r or r car. the biggest i believe is from the 2002 c70 coupe. all suspension components are relatively similar, at least, the bars are interchangeable.

    Hi Andrew

A little 'roll' is normal, but no where near as much as the 240's.

Check out the front and rear shocks for wear and the from suspension bushes.

Also the front stabilisar bar. A good mechanic with a lift could do this for you.

    All the best

Thanks guys for your replies. I'm surprised to hear from the experts that the 850 is, generally speaking, more stable than the 244. Our 6-year old 850 must be really worn off, since it is definitely less stable than the 22-year old 244 was.

I'm probably over-sensitive, because in the last decade I've added a great Buddha bely to my profile. Perhaps my own center of gravity keeps shifting .... the subject line said "old age" =:). Beyond the joke: a slim person would be less sensitive to lateral swings.

What is the tradeoff when installing a heavier swaybar (=stabiliser ? ). Just wonder what is stopping manufacturers from doing it upfront ? Is the car going to have a more heavy feeling ? Will there be more manual power required at the steering wheel ? Will other parts of the mechanical chain wear off faster, because of the additional weight and momentum ?

About suspension bushes: are they easy to change ? Or, do the mechanics have to unmount the whole suspension just to get to them ? When having to remove other parts first: is there any advantage in changing the suspension bushes at the same time as renewing the shock absorbers and/or the sway bar ? Or, are they independent of one another ?

As you can see, I have no direct knowledge of where/how these parts fit together. I only imagine if a mechanic has worked half a day just to get to a certain part, then it would make sense to renew other bits and pieces in the same area.
      Andrew

I was experiencing a similar problem and found that I had too much air pressure in the front tires. I looked at the recommended air pressure inside the fuel filler cap and adjusted accordingly. Night and day difference. Much more stable/ predictable.
