Throttle body leaning. Anyone done it? How? S70 1998

Hi, all. I checked my flame trap for the first time today. I have 42K miles on the car. Well, guess what? There was no flame trap in there!!! No my car is not a turbo, yes I am sure there was no flame trap in the holder. I went to the dealer and bought a new flame trap, housing and O-ring for $8. I replaced everything and while I was in there I cleaned up a bit. There was a lot of gunk in the housing and on the air intake hose. I also noticed that the throttle body is pretty gunky. The car runs fine, but I am still thinking of cleaning the throttle body just for good measure and because it may have gotten more gunk in absence of the flame trap (am wrong here? Please enlighten me). So, my question is what's the best way to clean the throttle body? Take it off the manifold? Leave it on? If take it off, are there any gotchas? What solvent to use? I could not find anything about throttle body cleaning on Bay 13, so I am wondering if anyone here knows the best way to do it.

    Well that is a co-incidence, I had a look at cleaning/inspecting the flame trap this morning and followed the Haynes manual as far as the 'turn the flame trap casing 15 mm. to the left' part. I could not get my fingers on the housing to turn it 15 mm. to the left. It looks to have 2 small 'knobs' on the housing which I presume you need to grip to turn to the left??

    How do you guys do it? By the way the car has 128klm on it and it looks very clean looking along the duct with a light to the inlet to the metal body. I believe the flame trap is still there but until I can undo the casing cannot confirm this.

    Another query - why does one need to change the engine oil whenever the flame trap is renewed? (as per the Haynes manual).

    Vlad, on a side note, my service advisor said that they usually discard the flame trap (non-turbo) instead of replacing it when a vehicle is in on one of it's regular service intervals.

      Brian, that's interesting. Why would they discard the flame trap? What does discarding it accomplish? I am not trying to be a wise guy, just honestly wondering. Without the flame trasp my air hose was dripping with gunk, I wonder if the flame trap would have reduced the gunk in there. I realize it is a maintanance item and without it you don;t need to look in there as often as there is nothing to clog up and make your seals go pop. I dunno, I just replaced the whole thing for $8 including the housing and the O-ring. I figured it can't hurt. I will keep an eye on it though. Don't want it to get clogged.

        Their reason (as far as I can remember) was a clogged flame trap causes a blockage -- probably causes more harm then good. I am assuming your dealer took the flame trap off when you brought your car in for service or repair?

        I will ask my service advisor again regarding the flame trap when I bring the car in in a couple of weeks. I am having them check the cooling system on my GLT as it is consistently losing coolant.

    I leave the throttle in place and just wipe it out well using denatured
    alcohol(rubbing alcholol) and a clean rag. It cleans up pretty easily.
    I hold the throttle open by pulling on the throttle cable while I
    clean it out (make sure the cable seats correctly when done).

    Any mild solvent would probably work.

      Ray, do I even need to clean it at all? When do you know that you need to clean it? I opened the throttle and stuck my finger behind it and I discovered a bunch of black gunk there. I figured cleaning it wouldn't be a bad idea. The car runs smooth, and there are no driveability problems whatsoever at this point. Should I even bother? Also, it seemed easy to take off and when out you can really see what you are doing and wether you got all the crap off. With it in place it seems I can miss spots and even leave some of the wiped gunk inside. I bought Chemtool carburettor cleaner in spray can. Is this stuff ok to use or rubbing alcohol, as you recommend?

        The problems I have seen reported that are attributed to a dirty
        throttle are engine RPMs reading high at idle. Though it probably
        takes a lot 'gunk' to keep the throttle open (just a bit) to cause
        this.

        I would imagine carburettor cleaner is fine but isn't it normally used
        with the engine running? I clean mine with the engine off and it really
        does not take too much solvent to get it clean.
