radio amplifier fuse blown

The OEM tape deck is completely dead in my 1997 850(127K). Inspection of the fuses found #7 (radio amplifier) blown. Replcement resulted in sparks and another blown fuse. Before I start exploring does anyone have any suggestions? I didn't find much on the search engine.

Thanks
Matt

    radio amplifier fuse blown

What model head unit do you have, and are you sure you have an external amplifier? Do you have an external CD changer? Antenna up/down switch? Have you checked the wiring diagrams to see what all is on that fuse? Does the fuse blow with the radio turned off?
If the fuse doesn't blow till you turn on the radio, you may want to start by pulling the head unit out far enough to disconnect the amplifier cable, then reconnect the battery, enter your radio code and replace the fuse. If the fuse doesn't blow with the radio on and the amp disconnected, it's probably either in your amp or in the wires between the amp and your speakers. (depending on the model of radio, the head unit may run the two dash speakers, and the amp the door/rear deck speakers).

thanks for the detailed response. The HU is an SC-811. I don't know for sure but I think it does have a separate amplifier since #7 fuse is designated as radio amplifier and #32 fuse is for the radio and some other things. I have to test what configuration causes it to blow.
