How to Install a CD Player V70-XC70 1998

Okay gang, our 98 V70 currently has a factory AM/FM and tape deck. #1 daughter suggests we enter the modern world and get a CD player for the old girl. Volvo dealer says $1,000.oo(CAN), I say yikes. So what have other ludditeDads done to please their offspring? Specifics would help, manufacturers, models etc.

My daughter will thank you!

Another option: My GLT has a CD player and my wife's NA doesn't. I am not sure what the price is now but 2 years ago I got a Volvo 6-disc CD changer (with glove box mounting kit) for my wife's NA for around $198. I liked it so much I got another one for my GLT, too. You keep the stock cassette/radio and just plug in the CD-changer.

Just a suggestion.

..Wheel,
I agree with Ray N. Be sure the seller has the code for the unit you are buying.

Easy way to go is with an OEM Radio from ebay. Make sure you get
the code to activate it. An SC-816 model is what you want. There
are 6 up for auction now. In the past they seem to sell for
about $225 (U.S.). You want one from a 98 or newer since the front
bezel is a dark grey on 70 series and the older 850s it was a
dark black (although a radio from an 850 will work, too).

You can swap the two radios in under 90 seconds. To take out the
radio push in on the two slotted tabs at the lower corners. They
pop out and act as handles. Pull out, unplug cables, plug in
new radio (cables will interchanges) and push new radio back in, turn
on ignition and type in the radio code.

Make sure you have your old radio's code, too. The radio can't be
used without it.

Ray's suggestion above sounds like the better way to go, it's inexpensive and the install is do-it-yourself. The only downsides are 1) will you find a trusty seller? and 2) how long can you expect the unit to last?

To go with a new aftermarket in-dash cd receiver, $1000 seems rather high, even in Canadian dollars. I would think you could find an electronics "superstore" offering a better package, installed and out the door. But still, expect closer to $600 maybe.

Another option would be to use a portable cd player, running that into your existing reciever via an adapter cable.
