S80 Gas Mileage S80 2003

I just returned from the Volvo dealership after looking at a new S80. I am impressed with the car but confused by the mileage claim on the window - 20 city/28 highway, with an expected range between 26-33 (highway). Consumers has a different number and AAA yet another number. Someone in the dealership said to expect 25 on a solid highway run. Does anyone have a good number, based on a not heavy foot and actual experience.

Mike

Those milage numbers are averages, and each of the sources uses a different method for weighting the city and road numbers.

My 2000 S80 Turbo averages around 20mpg in the city. AC use makes a minor difference. On the road I can average around 30mpg driving between 65 and 70mph. My only real complaint about the car is that it drives so well that it's easy for the speed to creep up beyond 80mph. Thereby blowing the 30 mpg figure.

I drive my 99 S80 40 miles one way to work everyday, and it looks like I average at 70/75 mph, about 23 mpg. A little less then that in town.

It is kind of odd that my 4 year old, 45K, S80 2000 always shows the message of average 21 MPG, does not matter that I drive city or long trip on highway.

We drove our 99 S80 T6 from Louisiana to Edmonton, Alberta Canada. On the highway we averaged 24, driving through mountains most of the way. In town it varies 21 is average, sometimes it is a little better, sometimes a little worse. It was extremely comfortable on that long 2 week trip. A year after that the transmission broke & all hell broke lose. I am cautiously optimistic that it may be fixed now. The transmission broke just after the warranty ran out. Make sure to get an extended warranty if you get one. Sandy

Mike;

I have a 2000 S80 T6.

The highway driving gas milage that is most frequently displayed in the message window is 24.x.

I calculate the gas milage frequently and I think it could get to 26 if my wife is driving.

During the winter when commuting to work I have seen 21.x as a low.

Rich

T6 or no? That makes a slight difference.

I drive normally about 75% of the time, but other times I may do a hard acceleration for fun. I have had the "average MPG" thing going for four months without a reset, and it gives me between 19-20MPG. It has never been less or more.

But, your mileage may vary. Expect 18-25, depending on your habits.

I have a 2003 2.9 S80 with about 6500 miles on it. My daily compute is a mix of city and highway, I've been consistantly getting around 19 mpg, On long highway only runs I get around 28 mpg. That's doing 65-70 mph, normal acceleration.
