850 Keyless entry problem 850

I just purchased a second remote keyless entry on eBay (exactly the same model no. as my current one). When I tried to program it as directed on this forum, the horn began honking and continued for some time. I pulled the key out of the ignition, put it in again and tried to start the car but it wouldn't start.

I was sitting in the car with the driver's door closed, thought I was following the instructions given (5 turns of the key, left it in the "on" position, then pressed the "lock" button on one remote, then the other within 10 seconds of the first.)

What am I doing wrong?

Are you sure the battery's good? Is the remote brand new? I've been thinking about getting another on eBay but I'm curious as to why there are suddenly so many on there. Where are these sellers getting the remotes? I've been to a lot of boneyards and the keys are rarely left in the car. It seems strange to me.

I haven't checked the battery of the "new" one. No, it's not new, but it looks unused, as though it might have been a spare. But regardless, that wouldn't explain why the horn began the series of honks since I was using the original keyless entry. I'll try again today, this time selecting the "unlock" button, and if that doesn't work I'll get new battery.

Does the second transmitter operate the doorlocks correctly after you finish reprogramming? Sounds like you have the proceedure correct. Can you straighten out the problem with the original transmitter and the engine starts normally? Here's the programming proceedure from the service manual just for reference:

        -----RECEIVER PROGRAMMING----
        --Transmitter Replacement--
If transmitter is replaced, unit may need reprogramming. It
is necessary that receiver be programmed with each key code. To
reprogram receiver, turn ignition switch to position I or II 5 times
within 10 seconds. Leave ignition on at fifth turn. Press either LOCK
or UNLOCK button on transmitter once within 30 seconds. If transmitter
is provided with different key codes, programming of each unique code
must be accomplished within 30 seconds. Turn ignition off. Verify
operation of each individual transmitter. (i.e. do the doorlocks work...).

Maybe its just a sequence thing. Keep trying.

          Mike:

No, the second remote isn't working at all. I could replace the batteries but hate to do that if the problem is something I'm doing wrong.

I see this car is equipped with an alarm system and the LED is working when I unsert my key in the doorlock. I'm wondering if the honking horn is the car's audible alarm system working (I have no info as to what function occurs).

Is there a way to deactivate the horn honking thing while I retry programming the remotes? (And let me get this straight: I have to reprogram both of them at the same time ... within 10 seconds of each other, right?)
