Small Leak in Evaporative Emission Control System V70-XC70

My Check Engine light came on this morning and I was told by a local repair shop that it was code P0442 - A Small Leak in the Evaporative Control System. How do I fix this, what is the Evaporative Emission Control System, where is it etc? Any thoughts? It is a 98 V70 AWD w/95,000

Thanks,

My problem turned out to be a small hole in the fuel filler neck above the gas tank. This repair will cost me over $600. (My extended warranty covers parts and labor but not diagnostic time, and this took three shop days to identify.)

check the integrity of your gas cap,and make sure you turn off your engine during re-fueling.

Its the system that prevents evaporative emissions from escaping during refueling and during operation. It prevents volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) from escaping to the atmosphere. VOCs and nitrogen oxides (NOx) - also emitted from the exhaust - react in the presence of sunlight to form photochemical ozone smog. This is the air pollution that infests places like Los Angeles, Houston, New York, etc.

It is very important that these systems operate well for human health and welfare, especially that of our children.

I think you will have to go to a dealer where they can perform a "smoke test" to find the leak. My 2001 is going in tomorrow for a new part to correct the same problem. On dealer instructions, I have been driving with the Check Engine light on for maybe a month.
