Catalytic Converter 850

I have a 1993 850. Is the catalytic converter on these cars necessary, can the car be driven without it?

93 brick:
while your engine may work w/o a converter, it may be illegal to do so because of environmental concerns. consult your local DMV on emissions requirements. also, remember that the oxygen sensor is located on the catalytic converter. its signal is required by the engine computer to correctly adjust the fuel/air mixture.

You can drive any of them without it, just be prepared for Check Engine Lights coming on all the time. I guess you can pull the lightbulb and not worry about it anymore.
