valves tapping and white smoke 850

My wife's 850 turbo was recently at a body shop for about a week to get the rear bumper replaced from a minor accident. When we went to pick up the car, she started the car up and there was a lot of white smoke coming out the exhaust and the valves were tapping pretty loudly. The idle was pretty rough too. The tapping was so loud that even the guy at the body shop opened the hood to see what was going on. Anyways, we were all surprised because we didn't think they can mess up the engine via fixing a rear bumper. So we decided to drive the car home. But after one block, the white smoke was so pronounced and the tapping so loud that we took the car back to the shop. The guy told us it couldn't have been them that caused this because they never even did anything to the engine. They said that all they did was disconnect the battery to replace a tail light assembly that had been damaged along with the bumper. Apparently the battery disconnect also triggered some codes so we need to have the dealer correct them. Even the ABS light came on.

I'm wondering if messin up the codes can create problems for the engine. If not, does anybody know why the engine would run so poorly? At this point, we are at a loss because the shop is not claiming responsibility, and quite frankly, I'm baffled at how fixing a bumper can mess up the engine. The guy also said it could be condensation in the cylinders from the car sitting for a while and them only driving it for a few seconds at a time to move the car from one part of the lot to the other. Is this a plausible explanation?

Thanks for any insights.

Did you note the mileage in and out when you picked up the car? I had this happen one time where the shop drove the car around without my permission. How did I know? We were waiting in the parking lot when they drove up in our car.

Prolonged storage (1 week, prolonged??) and condensation 850

In the Volvo owners manual it says that valve tapping will be longer if the car was not driven for a while. I am not sure why it is so prevalent in your case.

When I was buying my previous car, a '85 Prelude, it had the same white smoke when I started up. I heard that it was due to condensation. However, I do not know why you are having so much of it.

are you sure the smoke is white? If it is white it is coolant being burnt. blue smoke is oil and black smoke is fuel. smell the exhaust...is is sweet smelling?...then it is coolant and you have some sort of head gasket leak. This shouldn't happen while the car is sitting/short starts. I would think this would happen if the engine got overheated. Are you sure someone at the shop didn't take it for a joyride and fry your engine? have you ever had a problem with the car overheating?

      Thanks for your reply.
We have never had problems with the car overheating. I checked the coolant leveal and it was good. Checked the oil and it seemed fine. I also drove the car a bit longer and it seems to run a bit smoother. However, there now seems to be some black smoke coming out the tail pipe so I don't know what's going on? Anyways, it's not nearly as bad as before and the valve tapping is less pronounced although it is still there. However, the ABS light still comes on and then shuts off. It came on again and then went off. So I don't know what is going on.

i would suggest to investigate the body shop who did repair on your car ,,,there is no reason , your car should run the same as before you send it to the body shop ,,,,
