Is my PNP switch going out? 850 1996

Hello again,

Per my post below, my reverse lights have a delay before coming on, especially as it gets colder.

It was suggested that the PNP switch might be failing. To avoid becoming stranded somewhere (I'm one of those strange people who hate to get stranded, call a tow truck & be at the mercy of a dealership) should I replace it now?

I'm aware of the instructions on Bay 13. I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but it looks like a sucky job, unless someone tells me it's not as bad as it looks.

So, should I replace it now, or would that do any good? Thanks again.

If you really hate having reliability problems, go ahead and get it replaced. Like the other post said, the worse case someday is the risk of the tranny going into safe mode (locked in 3rd gear). This is no fun, but you can still get around and get it fixed somewhere.

Nice recycling of the term "Safe-Mode". I guess I could say my PRV 760 blue screened.

I do not think you will get stranded with this problem, in the worst case the transmission will act up, may go to limp-home mode, but the car will be moving.
I had this problem and went through 2 winters with it. This summer I finally replaced the switch. The job is well described in Bay 13, you have to take it easy and slow, do not force anything. I did not have the alignment tool, so I had to guess (not that hard).
The only step that I did not understand fully was removing and separating the male connector from the connector housing. Still, after spending some time I figured it out.

    Absolutely yes! 850 1996

I would replace it now, other wise it will be a nuisanse.

    Reason to replace:
Reverse light acting up that will confuse other traffic.
Car may start at 3rd gear during winter (I think).
