i'd ditch volvo on call, and find something reliable. volvo on call has farmed out the service to some 'Cross Country' association. They were less than helpful the one time I tried to use the service.

I tried to use volvo on call about 4 years ago, my alternator had misbehaved, leaving me stranded. (no idiot light ever came on!)

called volvo on call number, they took all the relevant information, including a cell phone number, and told me a tow truck would be there shortly.

...

an hour later, I called again, they said a truck was about 10 minutes away, but en route... things were busy as it was a rainy labor day weekend.

a second hour later, a police cruiser pulled up behind me, and the officer asked if i was waiting for a tow truck from cross country (who'd taken on the service for volvo on call). the officer relayed that there were no volvo on call/cross country tow trucks available. Rather than volvo on call/cross country calling me personally to let me know this, they called the state cops to let me know. i was directed to find my own tow truck service, and send cross country the bill. they did end up footing the towing bill. however, it also makes me wonder what the 7 years worth of premiums paid were for.

maybe volvo on call has since got its act together, i've no way of knowing.
i'd rather not take the chance.
