Auto-locking doors??? 850 1993

Couple of questions on a 93 850GLT.

1) Do these cars come with autolocking doors when you hit 30 KMH? My doors arnt locking, but there is a sound clicking sound that comes only the frist time I hit 30 KMH after starting the car!!

2) Please tell me that there is a switch broken on my car, you can start it without pushing the clutch in!! Thankfully, I park my car in neutral, so the car didnt go anywhere!

3) Signal lights will flash even with out the ignition being on?!?!?

Any thoughts????

Tony!!

Totally normal. There is no clutch switch...

Bye, Arno.

My '94 850 starts without the clutch pedal depressed as well. Nothing's broke on your car. My 240, Saab 900 and VW Golf were the same way (as long as you're in neutral).

I have the strange sound too...glad to know it's the ABS self testing.

My turn signals don't work w/ignition off.

1. The "sound" is the ABS self-check at 17 mph.
2. Volvos do not have an auto-locking door function.
3. Don't know about your clutch switch, but something is wrong.
4. Signal lights? Turn signals or hazard signal?

Thanks Gerald:

Were would you begin looking to see what is wrong. As a rule I dont EVER lend my car, but sometimes I have no choice, and I really do want that to be working properly.

It is the turning signal, not the hazard lights. I can live with this one though, its not really a biggie, but if its a simple fix Ill do it!!

Thanks again,

Tony!!

Which country are you in? Different markets have different specifications.

I've never known a Volvo with auto locking doors. However, strangely, my '93 850 GLT makes a funny sound at somewhere around 15 - 20 MPH (30 KMH) the first time after starting up. I've no idea what it is but it seems to come from the front left side of the vehicle. However, it sounds as though it is coming from underneath the car on my Volvo.

I've only ever known Japanese cars made for the Japanese market to have such a feature preventing the car starting unless the clutch is depressed. It's not a feature I know of an a Volvo. Get used to pressing the clutch in BEFORE starting the engine - otherwise you may damage something (yours is a Volvo though so damage to your own car would be unlikely!)

Can't help on the signal lights - probably a simple wiring problem where the signal lights are wired on the wrong side of the ignition switch.

I live in Canada. The sound is coming from the same place in my car, kinda underneath the car. Now Im really curious what this is for!!

Actually, GM was the first to introduce the clutch thing, and they did that in the early 70's. I always start the car with the clutch in, but I had, (not very willingly) lend my car, and my friend told me that he started it without the clutch, I didnt believe him, so I checked it myself, and well, you can. Seems odd that Volvo hypes up safety, but overlooked something like this.

Tony!!

The doors do not automatically lock because Volvo beleives that a locked door may be between you and potential help. They reccomend in the manual not to drive with the doors locked.

Isn't the clutch hydraulic? Would that have anything to do with it?

Well Volvo, being based in a wonderful country, have absolutely no idea what crime can do for car owners.

Living in Liverpool, England, I have got into the habit of locking my doors as soon as I am inside the vehicle. A sad but true fact about the world we live in today. I'm sure many readers are also in the same habit. Regardless of which country you live in.

Well, since I now own an 850, I'll get right on that. ;P I'm already working on a homebrew digital dash for my 740, may as well modify it to pulse at a certain speed. Or I could use the pedal location.. or something.
