service engine light wont reset

i tried the basic steps, (ignition to I, then hold odometer, turn to position II, wait till flashes, then dings)

i get no ding, and this is continuing to stay on, can anyone give me any other ideas? this came on for my normal oil change timing,

    i figured this out. as it states in the directions i was following unclearly, you must let go of the trip reset button when the Service light is flashing, not after it is done flashing. good luck to future users.

    Ignition to position I.
    Press and hold the trip reset button.
    Turn the key to position II while holding trip reset.
    When service light flashes, release trip button. Note, no chime will sound on 99/00 70 series, only the S-80 and 01 and newer 60/70 series, 00 and on 40 series chime.
    Turn key OFF, then start car.
    96-98 models require the reset tool or scan tool.
