Engine System Service Urgent V70-XC70

My 2001 V70 2.4T has a "Engine System Service Urgent" message on the dash and the warning light is on Orange. Anybody know what is the problem? Before this message appear, another message "Reduced Performance" came on earlier on the same trip? It went away briefly when I shut down the car but reappeared later.

Earlier when I was driving the car, I noticed a very slight periodic surge, barely noticeable...it doesn't even register on the speedometer or the tachometer. The car has 36,000 miles and I just bought it used a month ago. Any help will be appreciated.

Was also going to suggest you check the fuel filler cap. Did the dealer mention to you the emission control/safety system and how it is tied into the pressurized fuel tank?

If you remove the fuel filler cap while the engine is running or ignition switch is in position I., you may get an "engine check" condition. The computer reads the dropped pressure in the fuel tank and believes you may have a fuel leak or that the emission control system is defective.

V70's from late 90's to 2000 may even have this error "latch on" and had to be reset by the dealer. Later models may recover OK if you tighten the fuel filler cap as you did.

My best guess, and this is only a guess, is that something has gone out of whack in your engine management compuker. For folks like us with late model cars this means a trip to a dealer for compuker analysis. With that mileage you are still on warrantee, right? Should be covered.

Thanks for the info. I was reading this board hoping to find more info and see if anyone else might had a similar problem. I happened to come across a post that mentioned soemthing relating to the fuel system. So I went out and tightened the gas filler cap. Started the car up and the warning light and message disappeared...Strange! I drove it around a bit and everything was working fine! I hope it doesn't come back tomorrow! I am keeping my fingers crossed!

I think it's a coincidence that the light went out. It usually takes several driving cycles after tightening the cap for the light to go out.

You are right. The light and message reappeared and then went away again. I am clueless! Anyway I've made an appointment with the Volvo dealer who said nothing to worry about, they will check it out. She thinks it has to do with the engine emission control system! Will see on Friday.
