Instrument cluster flash and runs rough hitting standing water 850 1995

Our '95 will want to stall when it hits a medium size puddle of water in the road. This, along with the instrument cluster lights coming on. Once the car is thru and running ok (with the help of working the gas pedal) the lights go out and the car runs fine. What is going on?

Archtop:

Cluster lights flash on when the alternator is offline. Happens when the serpentine belt breaks or slips too much. In your case (has happened to me also on both volvo 740 and 850) the belt is slipping due to water splashing over it. maybe you need to change a new belt and retighten alternator bracket.
